Aithne

Aithne

Aithne's an explorer.  From the moment she was out of her egg she's been out to explore the world, one tree at a time--but she's always sure to be back in time for dinner.

"Aithne" is Celtic for "little fire", and that is absolutely what she is.  I had no particular plans when I started, but clearly she asserted herself easily so it wasn't a problem.  The inner wire structure as been improved and reinforced from spine to toes, and that includes the real silk velvet tail, making her fully poseable.

And then there is that fur.  I've been wanting to do fur like this for forever, so finally getting the opportunity to try it is nice.  A major pain and very time-consuming, but the end result is exactly what I was going for.  Plus it's incredibly soft to the touch, much like the velvet.

I have no idea what stone that is for her eyes, though.  They were beautiful and perfect and part of an assortment, so if anyone does know please feel free to tell me.
(Best guess so far: fancy jasper.)

Pray for the Planet

Pray for the Planet

And so two fascinations come together: prayer beads and Final Fantasy 7. ...No, I didn't think the connection existed before now, either. It was all because of these beads, discounted in the bargain bin and totally unwanted. I can't find them anywhere else, and there's probably a reason for it--it looks like someone swirled bright green paint into white cats eye beads, so there's a distinct glow to them. Otherwise known as (to me and me alone) Lifestream beads! Hey, why not. The "symbol" is Aerith's flowers with a ribbon around them. The rest just fell into place taking the general concept of a Catholic rosary and the background concept of the Sephirot.

And in case you're interested in the symbolism... Three groups of ten beads represent the three pillars/columns/"the three lines", and the ten steps/branches of the Sephirot. The white materia is just that--but the drop from it represents the "11th step/branch" which represents the abyss (but it's kind of blasphemous, ha ha, but then so am I). It must be acknowledged even by the protectors of the Planet, you understand. (Obviously I am not affiliated with any religion.)

Pray for the One-Winged Angel

Pray for the One-Winged Angel

And so two fascinations come together: prayer beads and Final Fantasy 7. ...No, I didn't think the connection existed before now, either. It was all because of Pray for the Planet's beads that I got this idea in the first place. These particular beads are black and beautifully textured, with tiny silver "cracks" running through them. Much more beautiful in person. So is the rainbow obsidian "black materia", which actually manages to have a silver glowing accent to it. Awesome.

And in case you're interested in the symbolism... Three groups of ten beads represent the three pillars/columns/"the three lines", and the ten steps/branches of the Sephirot. The black materia is just that--but the drop from it represents the "11th step/branch" which represents the abyss (but it's kind of blasphemous, ha ha, but then so am I). It seemed... appropriate for Sephiroth's symbol to rest on the edge of the abyss.

The original is sold, but I can take commissions for more.

Dancing Chocobo Cuff Bracelet

Dancing Chocobo Cuff Bracelet

I took way, way too long figuring out how many beads were used here. 1,802 delicas, 6 "materia beads", and 1 random lovely purple glass bead. Many a four-letter word was uttered after. Then I poured myself a drink. But look upon the dancing chocobo cuff bracelet and be happy, for they are dancing chocobos!

Yeah, this is completely insane. But it started out so innocently with just one FF4 chocobo sprite... which became two... then six. Then I can't really explain what happened. The chocobos made me, I swear it. ...Anyway. I really like how the dark purple background turned out, which is good--I wasn't so sure at first. And of course, well... chocobos. This actually successfully combined three requests in one: 1.) beaded chocobos, 2.) sized for a larger wrist, and 3.) a metal-free clasp. Well, I feel successful.

Sparkly Hylian Shield

Sparkly Hylian Shield

So. Um. What insanity. 34 Swarovski crystals. Hand-set. So, as you can see... Ocarina of Time still has a place in my heart.

For those of you who are not insane Legend of Zelda fans, this is the shield carried by Link, the Hero of Time. Well, it's mostly the shield. It's sort of an abstract of an abstract with SPARKLY but... yeah.

Dangly Tachikoma Necklace

Dangly Tachikoma Necklace

Who wouldn't love a tiny little Tachikoma looking out for them? I did not plan this. I know I say that a lot, but I mean it every time. I just saw the back bead, which happened to be next to the round bead, and... yeah. I refuse to try and explain how much of a pain it was to get the wire to work exactly like I wanted it to, but I succeeded and it's over now and that seems really important. And, well, Tachikoma!

So I had the little Tachikoma, right? Surely that was over and i could get back to other things. ...And then somehow the idea of making a whole necklace for it happened, and... I don't know. I went through my beads, and there was this utterly gorgeous blue agate that worked perfectly. So. Yes. That's several more hours of my life, putting that thing together. I do hope it's worthy of the Major herself.

(Ghost in the Shell and Tachikomas belong to Masamune Shirow, Production I.G, and probably a lot more people and companies that I fail to realize. Some day I will have a Motoko action figure. Some day.)

Renfrew

Renfrew

Renfrew is bright-eyed and brand new to the world, and has a curiosity as enormous as his appetite. He’ll lose the iridescent green on his feet and tummy as he grows older, but he’ll gain them in stripes on his back.  Until then, he’s perfectly happy with the way he looks, thank you.

I MEANT TO DO SOMETHING SIMPLE.  I swear I did, really.  I recall, clearly, starting on the head and thinking, “Well, this should be easy.”  I have no idea what happened.  Somewhere along the way the idea to make him wired for full poseability came up and… I don’t know.  Head, neck, back, tail, legs and even each individual toe is all fully wired, fully poseable.

37 lovely glass beads grace Renfrew’s back and the top of his feet, and his eyes are real amethyst.  He’s made of smooth, soft acrylic yarn, and the green highlights are green iridescent pigment in a fabric paint base (it’s not coming off, in other words).  He’s 9.25 inches in length with his tail out straight, he stands roughly 3.5 inches tall (though his legs can be further straightened to stand taller if you’re into that sort of thing), and he’s approximately 2 inches wide at his widest point.

(“Renfrew” means “from the still waters” in Welsh, by the way.  It fit beautifully.)

Velma

Velma

She was going to be another choker. But she insisted otherwise, so... clearly she's got some personality to her.

Perfecting my technique with various materials. And, well, shiny spiders make me happy, obviously. The extremely bright pink beads have a bit of a gold sheen to them, and the black beads are a bit faceted for an extra little sparkle. All in all, this... still took a lot longer than I think it should have, but I'm getting there.
